Juan Rulfo – Memory project

Stefan Gassner with Juan Carlos Rulfo

Together with Juan Carlos Rulfo we started and worked on this multimedia memory project, using the beginning of the novel as an inspiration and starting point for the students to turn their own memories into stories. The project ended with a concept for a social network and an app.

“I came to Comala because I was told that my father lived here, a certain Pedro Páramo. My mum told me that. And I promised her I would go and see him as soon as she died. I squeezed her hands to confirm it, because she was dying and I would have promised anything. … But I didn’t think about keeping my promise. Until I was suddenly full of dreams and my illusions ran away with me.”

His narrative work is undoubtedly based on memory, while his photographic work is based on oblivion.

Juan Rulfo (*Apulco (Jalisco), 16 May 1917 –  Mexico City, 7 January 1986) was a Mexican writer, scriptwriter and photographer. He is considered one of the most important Spanish-American writers of the 20th century. His reputation is based on two of his three narrative works: the collection of short stories El Llano en llamas, published in 1953, and his novel Pedro Páramo, published in 1955.

Juan Carlos Rulfo (Mexico City, 24 January 1964) is a Mexican film director. He is the son of Juan Rulfo and Clara Aparicio de Rulfo. His first feature film was the short El Abuelo Cheno y otras historias (1995), made with the support of the CCC, in which he narrates the life of his grandfather. His first feature film was released in 1999: Del olvido al no me acuerdo, a documentary filmed in the Llano Grande region of Jalisco, where his father was born. With this film, Juan Carlos won four Ariel Awards and positioned himself as one of the most important contemporary Mexican directors.
